Sweet potato cakes with milk and poppy seeds - recipe
Regional speciality Eastern Bohemia
Cooking time:45 min
This dish is so well known that a dog character in a popular Czech cartoon bears its name - and making it is also child’s play. All you really do is boil the potatoes in a pan until you have a thick dough, from which you form large gnocchi. If you prefer savoury dishes, add cheese and bacon fried in butter instead of sugar.
Speciality:
| 500 g potatoes 200 g wholemeal flour salt 400 g milk |
200 g ground poppy seeds icing sugar 200 g butter |
Instructions:
Boil the potatoes in water with just a pinch of salt. When cooked, drain off all but around 4 cm of the water. Tip in the flour and use a wooden spoon to make holes so that steam can escape. Put the lid on the pan and leave on a low heat until the water has evaporated. Then mash the potatoes and flour together.
From this sticky dough make gnocchi with a large spoon which you submerge in hot milk each time so that the mixture doesn’t attach itself. Put them on a plate with hot milk, sprinkle with poppy seeds and sugar, and drizzle with melted butter.
