West-Bohemian Spas
This region has everything to sooth body and soul. Hundreds of mineral springs rise from the ground, and exclusive hotels specializing in health and wellness, aqua centres made to look like Roman baths and unusual beer spas abound. A spa break should also involve sport of some kind, and there are nature trails, cycle paths, golf courses,
cross-country skiing trails and downhill slopes just waiting for visitors.
After a strenuous hike through the Slavkovský Forest protected area you can unwind with a stroll along colonnades in Carlsbad, Františkovy Lázně, Marienbad and other spa towns. Anyone with an interest in history should head for the monastery at Teplá, the castles and chateaux at Bečov nad Teplou, Kynžvart and Loket and many other places. Finally you shouldn't forget to wet your whistle with some of our delicious Becherovka, still made according to the original Carlsbad recipe.
Where to from boredom...?
Mariánské Lázně
The most recently established spa is the third point
in the so-called West Bohemian Spa Triangle. Many
springs rise in the town and surrounding area, about
half of which are used in spa procedures.
Vildštejn Castle at Skalná u Chebu
One of the oldest castles in the Cheb District was
founded in 1166. The cellars contain an archaeological
exhibition on the history of the castle and
the White Lady who was buried alive in one of the
walls.
Carlsbad
This is the largest Czech spa town, founded in the
14th century by Czech King Charles IV. The best
known of the 80 or so springs in the town is the
Vřídlo, which shoots 12 metres up into the air.
Since 1946 Carlsbad has hosted an international
film festival.
Františkovy Lázně
The curative properties of the local springs were
known as early as the 15th century. Today 23 of
these are used in various procedures. The urban
conservation area has a distinctive chessboard layout
and is ringed with parks and woodland.
Loket Castle
This is an early Gothic castle established in the 13th
century above the River Ohře, and refashioned in
the Renaissance era. In the dungeons visitors can
see a multimedia exhibition on medieval torture
instruments.
