Prague Environs
Anyone who likes architecture, places of natural beauty and active holidays is certain to love the area around Prague. Our list of places to see includes a number of publicly accessible mansions, chateau gardens, museums, monuments and medieval forts. You can follow in the footsteps of historical figures at Karlštejn and Křivoklát castles, at the chateau in Konopiště and in the town of Kutná Hora, whose historical centre was declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Several protected areas such as the Křivoklátsko biosphere reserve, the idyllic landscape of the Posázaví region and the Czech Karst area including the Koněprusy caves are ideal for naturewatching. For sports fans there are golf courses and an extensive network of cycling trails, and we shouldn't forget the long canoeing and kayaking tradition on the Vltava, Berounka and Sázava rivers. Last but not least the spa town of Poděbrady invites you to enjoy some rest and relaxation.

Karlštejn Castle
This Gothic castle bears the name of its founder, Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV. The stronghold served as a place of safekeeping for sacred relics and the imperial crown jewels, which were later stored at Prague Castle. The Chapel of the Holy Cross has some rare panel paintings by Master Theodoricus dating from the 14th century.
Příbram Mining Museum
The historical complex of the Příbram mines and their various exhibitions are one of the country’s unique industrial heritage sites. Children in particular will enjoy a ride in a mine train to the deepest shaft (the Prokop Mine at 1600m) and a tour of the underground spaces.
The spa town of Poděbrady
The town where Czech King George of Poděbrady was born can pride itself on an old chateau rebuilt in the Baroque era and a famous golf course, but it’s the spa treating heart and circulatory disease that has done most to make this a much celebrated destination.
Kutná Hora
Once famed for its silver mining industry, today other precious objects attract visitors’ attention – the historical centre including the Gothic Cathedral of St Barbara and the Church of the Assumption in Sedlec figure on UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage list.
Křivoklát Castle
This Central Bohemian hunting castle belonging to the crowned heads of the Czech lands is surrounded by incredibly beautiful countryside, which has been declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. The castle boasts a wonderful chapel with a well preserved Late Gothic altar.
