Pilsen Region
For centuries the inhabitants of the Pilsen Region have hosted pilgrims crossing the border on their way to Prague, or in the opposite direction to Bavaria. In Pilsen's historical centre, and in the flower-filled parks which encircle it, we find a number of small taverns and restaurants which will satisfy even the most discerning palette. This, of course, also includes the world famous beer brewed at the city's Pilsner Urquell Brewery.
Another place worth visiting is the Dinopark, which takes visitors on an excursion into the distant past. Return to the present day with a visit to the modern zoo. Around Pilsen, don't miss the water-powered blacksmiths workshop industrial heritage site in Dobřív, Radyně Castle and the region's chateaux such as those at Kozel, Manětín, Nebílovy and Zbiroh. The area also has a wealth of ecclesiastical monuments such as the Cistercian monastery at Plasy and the Rotunda of St Peter in Starý Plzenec.

Plasy Monastery
The most important rebuilding project took place at this Cistercian monastery in the 18th century, and is closely associated with the architect Santini. This famous builder also worked on the Chapel of the Virgin in Mladotice, where he employed his trademark six-pointed star layout.
Dobřív water-powered blacksmith’s workshop
This is the largest and most important place of its kind in the Czech Republic. The period machinery at this 19th-century mechanised smithy is still in working order, and demonstrations are given by experienced craftsmen who can even school you in their skills and issue you with a certificate.
Plzeň (Pilsen)
After visiting the Gothic Cathedral of St Bartholomew, which boasts the tallest church spire in the Czech Republic (102 m), let yourself be amazed by the Great Synagogue, the largest in the country and third largest in the world. Beer fans should head straight for the Brewery Museum.
Starý Plzenec
Claiming to be the oldest ecclesiastical building in the Czech lands, this pre-Romanesque rotunda from the late 10th century is all that remains of a royal castle. The structure recently underwent renovation and can be visited by calling ahead.
Kozel Chateau
This neo-Classical hunting castle, surrounded by a large landscaped park, bears the name of the pagans’ favourite sacrifi cial animal (the goat), which would be slaughtered to bring a good harvest. The Rococo and neo-Classical interiors with their period furniture, the chateau’s glasshouses riding school and stables are all worth exploring.
