Eastern Bohemia
This region extending from the Elbe Plane to the highest peaks of the Orlické Mountains is rich in natural, historical and cultural places of interest. Litomyšl can pride itself on being the birthplace of Bedřich Smetana as well as on its inclusion in UNESCO's list of World Cultural Heritage Sites thanks to its Renaissance chateau. Writer Alois Jirásek first saw the light of day in Hronov, where he has been honoured for almost the last 80 years with a theatre festival bearing his name.
Other popular destinations include the zoo and safari park in Dvůr Králové nad Labem, the Highlands Open-Air Museum in Hlinsko and the walled town of Polička, one of the best preserved in all central Europe. The magic of history can also be experienced at various castles such as Kunětická hora, Rychmburk and Svojanov. Litomyšl
The Renaissance chateau complex, which features in UNESCO’s list of World Cultural Heritage Sites, and the town which surrounds it holds an annual festival called Smetana’s Litomyšl, named after the town’s most illustrious son.
Bohdaneč Spa
This mud spa in a landscape rich in lakes and leafy forests can boast several buildings by the famous architect Gočár. These include a cubist pavilion named after its illustrious designer, a water tower and the Škroup Pension.
Adršpach-Teplice “rock towns”
This nature reserve with its so-called ‘rock towns’ manmade lake and waterfall has fl aunted its beauty to an oversees public on the silver screen in the fi lm The Chronicles of Narnia.
Zoo and Safari Park in Dvůr Králové
You don’t have to leave the Continent to visit Africa. Just come to this safari park with the largest collection of African animals in Europe. Walk among the antelope, buff alo, giraff e and zebra, and experience the evening feeding of the lions and leopards.
Třebechovice pod Orebem
Here you will find a collection of nativity scenes made using various materials, the highlight of which is the century-old mechanical Probošt Nativity Scene, with more than 2,000 wooden fi gures powered by an electric motor.
